What is the AP Biology Exam?
What is the AP Biology Exam?
The AP Biology exam is an introductory college level biology course exam. Students are tested on their understanding of the following biology topics:
- Chemistry of life
- Cell structure and function
- Cellular genetics
- Cellular communication and cell cycle
- Gene expression and heredity
- Natural selection and ecology
Keep these topics in mind for your AP Bio exam prep.
How is the AP Biology scored?
The exam scoring process depends on the expertise of both AP teachers and college faculty. Multiple choice questions are scored by machine and the free-response questions are scored by college faculty and AP teachers.
AP score can be interpreted as follows:
- 5 is the equivalent of a letter A grade
- 4 is the equivalent of letter B grade
- 3 is the equivalent of a letter C grade
- 1 and 2 are the equivalent of letter F grade
How long is the exam?
The duration of the Advanced Placement Biology exam is 3 hours. It is divided into two parts: a multiple-choice section and a free-response section.
College Course Equivalent
The AP Biology course is equivalent to a two-semester preliminary course for Biology majors. The students should have completed high school courses in Biology and Chemistry. This course also requires 25 percent of laboratory practice, with the focus on students applying science practice. Many students taking AP Biology should also consider AP Chemistry to expand their college applications.
AP Biology Exam Format
The College Board ensures the AP Biology Exam has consistent question types, scoring guidelines, and weighting. This way you and your student know what to expect on the day of the exam.
The AP Biology exam is divided into two sections: multiple-choice and free-response questions.
section 1
AP Biology Multiple choice
There are 60 questions divided into individual questions and a set of questions broken down into 4-5 question sets.
This part of the test counts as 50% of the exam score.
Students have 90 minutes to complete Section 1.
Section 2
AP Biology Free response
There are a total of 6 questions in the AP Bio FRQ:
2 long questions are worth 8-10 points. Long answer questions ask students to illustrate and interpret experimental results, graph, and analyze data.
4 short answer questions are worth 4-5 points. The short answer questions focus on scientific information, data analysis, visual representation, and concept analysis.
Clear and accurate answers are the best way to earn points in this section.
This part counts for 50% of the exam score.
Students have 90 minutes to complete Section 2.
